Cisco Ups the Security Appliance Ante

Late last month, Cisco Systems Inc. announced its highest-performance security appliance offering to date, the new ASA 5580 Series. The ASA 5580 is a high-performance security platform that Cisco says is suitable for use as either a scalable firewall (with up to 20 Gbps of overall throughput) or as a 10,000-user remote-access concentrator for secure sockets layer (SSL) and IP security (IPsec)-based virtual private networks (VPNs).

Industry talking-heads give Cisco’s newest — and highest-performance — security appliance generally favorable marks. “[T]he new products will significantly extend Cisco’s ability to address the high end of the firewall and VPN markets. The new ASA 5580-40 will deliver an order of magnitude improvement in firewall throughput compared to the existing top-end ASA 5550 appliance,” said Andrew Braunberg, an analyst with consultancy Current Analysis.

IBM Delivers New Software to Help Improve IP-Based Services

IBM today announced new software designed to help communications service providers improve the quality of their Internet Protocol television (IPTV), Internet Protocol virtual private networks (IP-VPN) and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services. The new offerings are modified versions of IBM Tivoli Netcool Service Quality Manager — tailored for one service, such as IPTV, and designed for easy installation while supporting a variety of IT environments.

Issues that plague these service providers and their customers can range from jagged audio, static or pixilated video, to delayed buffering of content and dropped transmissions altogether. In a recent IBM survey of more than 250 global telecom executives, 89 percent indicated that service quality is emerging as an important differentiator, yet nearly half said their organizations had no end-to-end service assurance capability.

VPN roams from LAN to 3G

US comms developer Smith Micro has claimed at Mobile World Congress that it can provide persistent secure sessions between mobile devices and enterprise applications, even when the client device moves from one type of connection to another.

The company said this means a user could connect via the office LAN or WLAN, then move outside and switch to wireless broadband or a public hotspot, say, without having to log into the VPN or the application again.
